[He heads out from the treehouse after a few more minutes, through the forest to the cabin. When he reaches it he doesn't bother with the front door, just climbing up the side onto the roof.

He's a solid grey at this point, with no hint of colour, and while he's still looking tired and scruffy he's nowhere near as bad as he had been when he had come back from the dead.]

Hey.

[ With the orc patrols coming ever closer, Kurt's been taking shifts on watch above the cabin. He spots Fern coming and by the time the teenager climbs up, has moved up a little to make room beside him. ]

Hello. [ He doesn't turn his head to study Fern too closely, understanding that it might not be a pleasant experience to be stared at, but he holds up one arm, inviting him in for a hug if he wants one. ] I'm sorry, mein Freund.

[Fern is immediately going in for that hug, latching onto him tightly. Thank you, Kurt, he really needs it.]

I hate this place.

[He hates it so, so much. You better believe if he could cut this entire town to pieces he'd be doing it right now.]

[ Kurt pulls him close against his side, his tail curling around him as well for good measure. He sighs softly, looking down at what he can see of Fern's face. ]

I know. It's given us so much, and takes away just as easily. I think I prefer when it's just monsters chasing us through hedge mazes.

[It probably isn't a good sign that he isn't bursting into tears. He feels too numb to manage anything aside from the hug, and reaching out in the first place. The latter was a big step for him.]

Monsters are easy, even the ones that win sometimes. I'd take the Lich again over this any day.

[ Kurt makes an agreeable noise, gently rubbing Fern's shoulder. ]

Do you want to talk about him? It might help.

[It might, or it might make him actually start crying. He isn't really sure which is more likely, so he's going to go with Kurt's suggestion.]

Well... he definitely wasn't from Ooo. He was a regular human, and he was really smart. And really nervous most of the time, 'cause he didn't really get along with people. He worked for the FBI [He's over-pronouncing that, eff-bee-eye, still pretty unfamiliar with the whole concept] to help them catch criminals.

He does sound smart, if he worked with the FBI. [ Kurt's experiences with government officials have been less than stellar, but he ignores the impulse to be snippy and squeezes Fern a little instead. ]

I'm sorry I didn't know him better. He was clearly very important to you.

[Since the FBI doesn't exist in Ooo Fern's entire knowledge of the organization lies with Will, so he only has good impressions of it. He nods a little.]

He was really smart. And he liked keeping to himself, so don't worry about it.

[Chances are Will would've just been prickly towards Kurt, honestly.]

We'd go fishing, sometimes. He had a boat and was really good at it.
